We know today that Christopher Columbus is not the first to have "discovered" America. Vikings, under the command of Leif Ericson, have already joined North America around the year 1000 and attempted to settle there, but without success.

The discovery of Christopher Columbus is indeed the one that really marked the beginning of the sustainable exploration of the American continent by the Europeans, as well as its colonization.
